Feature Overview
The App Changelog Insights overlay helps you understand how app changes, such as title, icon, screenshots, description, version updates, SDK installs, and more, influence its performance.
By overlaying app store changes directly on key trend charts, you can easily connect spikes or drops in Downloads, Active Users, Sessions, Rankings, Ratings, Reviews, Revenue and Audience Insights (Age & Gender Distribution) with real updates made to an app.
Use this feature to quickly diagnose performance shifts, understand competitor strategy, and identify which product or metadata changes actually moved the needle.
The following app updates are displayed as events on the chart:
- Title
- Icon
- Screenshots
- Description
- Subtitle (iOS)/Short Description (Android)
- Release Notes ("What’s New")
- Price (in USD)
- Version
- Category
- Publisher Name
- Permissions - requires the ‘App Technographics’ add-on
- SDKs (clicking the SDK event opens the SDK page) - requires the ‘App Technographics’ add-on
What is the value?
The App Changelog Insights overlay gives you the missing context behind competitor performance growth trends. It helps you understand why downloads, active users, or sessions spike or drop, so you can immediately see the specific changes that occurred at that moment. Changes can be metadata elements (like title, icon, category) or more technical indicators (like permissions, SDK, and version updates).
This makes it easy to:
- Explain sudden competitor shifts by tying performance data directly to real changes in the app
- Understand competitor product strategy by monitoring how often they update their SDK stack and permissions and what changes make a difference to usage and sessions
- Validate competitor ASO strategy by confirming whether app store listing changes (e.g. title, subtitle, screenshots, description) improved ranking or downloads
- Avoid false assumptions by ensuring competitor performance changes are linked to actual events, removing guesswork
- Reveal market-specific opportunities by comparing localized updates and their impact across countries
Ultimately, the overlay helps you move from reactive analysis (something changed) to proactive insight (this is why it changed), enabling faster decision-making and more confident optimization.
Viewing Before vs After app changes
For many events, the overlay shows both the previous and updated values so you can clearly see what changed:
| Event type | What you will see |
| Title | Old vs. new title text |
| Icon | Old icon image vs. new icon image |
| Subtitle/Short description | Old vs. new text |
| Description | A highlighted diff showing text changes (e.g., additions/removals) |
| Category | Old vs. new category |
| Price | Old vs. new price (e.g., “Free” → “$1.56”) |
| Publisher name | Old vs. new publisher |
| Version | Old version → new version |
| Release notes | “What’s New” text for each update |
This helps you easily identify the exact change that preceded (or followed) a performance shift.
Where to find App Changelog Insights:
- Navigate to App Intelligence
- Open one of the following reports: Downloads, Active Users or Sessions
- Look for the Changelog Overlay section or hover above the chart
- Hover over any event marker to see:
- The event type
- The time of the change
- The before vs. after comparison
- Any additional details (e.g. icon comparison, release notes)
Tip: Change the date range to zoom in around major metadata changes to better isolate their impact.
Tips and best practice
- Combine with App Reviews. If metadata changes coincide with review sentiment shifts, you may identify product issues or successes.
- Check multiple markets. Some metadata changes are country-specific; comparing markets may reveal localized marketing strategy changes.
- Pair with App Technographics (SDK) insights. When SDK events appear, click through to see the technologies added or removed and assess the impact on performance.
- Look for patterns. If an app’s icon refresh consistently aligns with performance increases, this may indicate strong brand optimization.
FAQs
- Which charts support the changelog overlay?
The overlay is currently available on Downloads, Active Users (DAU/MAU/WAU) and Sessions. More are coming soon.
- Do changelog events appear for every country?
Many metadata fields are country-specific (title, icon, description, screenshots, subtitle, price, release notes), while others are global (version, category, publisher, permissions, SDKs). If you’re viewing data for a specific country, you’ll see events relevant to that market.
- Can I see app changes for competitor apps?
The overlay is available for any app in App Intelligence. You can see when competitors change their icon, update their version, refresh screenshots, adjust categories or push new release notes.
