Using App Trackers

Trackers give you a ready-made way to benchmark your app against up to 25 competitors so you can compare and monitor performance over time.

By bringing together key metrics, download share trends and Keyword Rank Tracker data in a single view, Trackers help you easily benchmark across a broader competitive set and always stay on top of your competitive market.

This view is designed to be your go-to for ongoing competitive intelligence: built once, revisited continuously.

What’s the value?

Trackers provide a structured, always-on way to monitor how your app stacks up against the competition. Whether you are tracking downloads, engagement, or keyword visibility, everything you need is in one place.

With a Tracker, you can:

  • Create a custom set of up to 25 apps and monitor how the competitive landscape changes over time
  • Compare key performance metrics side by side - including Downloads, Rankings, Ratings, Reviews, MAU, Daily Stickiness and Revenue - to quickly identify where you are gaining or losing ground
  • Analyze Download Share across daily, weekly or monthly time granularities to understand how market share is split between you and your competitors
  • Monitor keywords performance with the Keywords Rank Tracker (inbuilt within the Tracker), tracking keyword rankings, search volume, difficulty and ownership across your competitive set
  • Save your Trackers and revisit them anytime as your data updates continuously

How to create a tracker

From your App Intelligence Homepage, click ‘Create a Tracker’ which will be clearly visible near the top of the page.

Step 1: Select a Country

Start by choosing the country market you want to monitor. Each Tracker is tied to a specific country, so the data will reflect store performance for that specific market. If you want to monitor performance across multiple markets, you need to create separate Trackers for each:

Step 2: Select Your App

Next, search for and select the primary app you want to monitor. This becomes the anchor of your Tracker. You can search across both the App Store and Google Play. Note that once you select an app from a specific platform, all subsequent search results will be filtered to that same platform:

Step 3: Select Competitor Apps

Add up to 25 competitor apps to benchmark against. Similarweb will suggest similar apps to help you build your set quickly, or you can search manually. Your Tracker will be automatically named based on your selections, but you can customize the name before saving. Once you're satisfied with your set, click Start tracking.

What’s in your tracker?

Once created, your Tracker is accessible from the Homepage. Just click on it to find two tabs, each designed to give you a different lens on competitive performance:

Benchmark Tab

The Benchmark tab gives you a side-by-side performance overview of your anchor app versus the competitors in your Tracker for the chosen country and time period. Use it to quickly spot who is gaining momentum, who is falling behind, and where you stand relative to the competition. Key metrics include:

  • Store Downloads: See total download volume and top countries for each app, and whether it is trending up or down.
  • Ranking: See how each app ranks on the App Store or Google Play top charts as of the last day of the selected period, and which category it ranks under
  • Ratings: Compare the average rating and total number of ratings for each app as of the last day of the selected period, alongside the change from the first day, so you can see whether user sentiment is improving or declining over time
  • Analyzed Reviews: See the total number of reviews collected for each app during the selected period, broken down by sentiment — positive, negative, and mixed — so you can gauge how users are talking about each app and spot shifts in satisfaction
  • MAU: Track Monthly Active Users to understand the size of each app's audience, and whether that audience is growing or shrinking
  • Daily Stickiness: Measure how often monthly users return on a daily basis, a strong indicator of engagement quality
  • Revenue: Compare total estimated revenue generated by each app, covering paid downloads, in-app purchases and subscriptions.

Beyond the per-app metrics, the tab also includes a Download Share chart, which shows a breakdown of how total downloads are split across your competitive set over time. Use the Daily, Weekly, or Monthly toggles to zoom in or out on the trends that matter most to you:

Keywords Rank Tracker Tab

The Keywords Rank Tracker lets you monitor how your app and its competitors rank for specific search keywords in the app store. Build a keyword list, then track ranking positions across your competitive set and see how they shift day over day. For each keyword, you can also assess search volume, difficulty, and which app currently owns the top spot, so you can identify where competitors are winning, uncover ranking opportunities, and measure whether your ASO efforts are paying off over time.
