Using App Keyword Rank Tracker

The App Keyword Rank Tracker allows you to monitor how apps rank in app store search results for selected keywords over time. By tracking keyword rankings across countries and languages, alongside keyword search volume and difficulty score, this report helps teams evaluate ASO performance and understand how visibility changes in response to optimization efforts like title and description updates or PPC campaigns.

The App Keyword Rank Tracker is built into Trackers - Similarweb's competitive benchmarking tool for monitoring your app against up to 25 competitors in one place.

This view is designed to help you continuously benchmark keyword performance across competing apps.

What is the Value?

The App Keyword Rank Tracker provides visibility into how well an app performs for specific organic keywords in app store search, for both Google and Apple. These insights allow you to:

  • Measure the effectiveness of your ASO strategy over time
  • Track keyword ranking changes on a daily basis
  • Understand keyword demand through search volume and keyword difficulty insights
  • Monitor competitive positioning across key keywords
  • See who ranks #1 for a keyword

By combining keyword rankings with volume and other competitive metrics, you can prioritize optimization efforts and stay ahead of the competition.

How to Use the Feature

The App Keyword Rank Tracker lets you build a keyword list and monitor how multiple apps rank for those terms across different countries and languages, so you can optimize based on location. Below are the key elements of the tracker tool and how to use them.

Adding Keywords

Use the Add Keywords option to create your keyword tracking list. You can add them manually or in bulk, and then click ‘Add Keywords’ to save them to your tracker. Once added, your keywords will start being tracked immediately, with ranking data available within 48 hours.

Adding Keywords

Keyword Ranking Table

For each keyword, the table shows how selected apps rank in search results for the chosen country, language and date.

You can use ranking data to:

  • Track visibility gains or losses over time
  • Measure the impact of ASO updates or metadata changes
  • Benchmark keyword performance across competitors

Keyword Status Indicators

The report uses icons to clearly indicate data availability:

Status Indicator  What it means
“–” Not ranked The keyword exists, but the app is not ranked in organic search results.
Clock Icon You can add any keyword to the list but if it’s a new keyword, historical data is not yet available. Tracking begins on the day the keyword is added, and rankings will appear within 48 hours.
Numeric Rank Indicates the app’s ranking position for that keyword on the selected date.

Search Volume

The Volume column shows estimated keyword search demand, going from 1 to 100, with 100 indicating high volume, traffic and searches for the keyword, country or language. You can use search volume to:

  • Prioritize high-demand keywords
  • Balance keyword opportunity against competition
  • Identify keywords with strong potential

For newly added keywords, volume may appear as “Estimating Volume” until enough data is available.

Keyword Difficulty

This indicates how competitive a keyword is to rank for. High difficulty suggests that it is very hard to rank for, with a very strong owner of that keyword. Seeing the difficulty will help you:

  • Understand ranking difficulty at a glance
  • Balance keyword demand with competitiveness
  • Identify more achievable ASO opportunities

Keyword Owner

This column indicates which app currently holds the top ranking position for the keyword. You can use this insight to:

  • Quickly identify the most dominant competitors
  • Understand who owns the most valuable keywords

Country and Language Coverage

Keyword rankings are available across 12 supported countries, each measured in its respective app store language. (More countries and languages will be added in the future, so please contact your AM for more info.)

Use country and date filters to:

  • Compare keyword performance across markets
  • Identify localization or regional ASO opportunities
  • Track how rankings evolve over time

FAQs

  1. Can I create different keyword lists for different countries?

No. There is currently one global keyword list per app. Rankings are measured per country and language using the same keyword set.

  1. Why do I see a clock icon or ‘–’ instead of a ranking?

The clock icon indicates that the keyword was recently added. Tracking begins immediately and ranking data will appear within 48 hours. N/A means the app is not ranked for that keyword in organic search results for the selected country.

  1.  Do you support paid keywords?

Not yet, but we expect to have this available later in 2026.

  1. Is there a limit to how many keywords I can add in total?

Yes, with App Business you can add up to 2,000 keywords per account

       5. Why can't I see keyword data when my Tracker is set to Worldwide?

Keyword data in the Keywords Rank Tracker is only available when a specific country market is selected. If your Tracker is set to Worldwide, keyword rankings will not be displayed. To access keyword data, create a Tracker for a specific country.
