Why the BBC Lost to The Guardian

BBC dominates UK traffic… until you look at Gen AI.

In this video, I compare BBC and The Guardian using Similarweb’s Gen AI traffic data and discover something completely unexpected. Despite getting around 50% of all traffic across channels, BBC is barely visible in Gen AI results. Meanwhile, The Guardian is quietly capturing the lion’s share.

Why? Using Similarweb, I uncover the real story:

  • BBC is actively blocking chatbots from crawling its site. Despite this, it still receives Gen AI traffic but only to top-level pages like the homepage and news category, not individual articles.
  • The Guardian’s traffic is distributed across thousands of deep article pages actual news stories buried five folders deep. These are showing up in Gen AI results thanks to long, specific prompts.

The result? The Guardian is winning in a space the BBC has chosen to sit out.

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • How to analyze Gen AI traffic patterns using Similarweb
  • Why architecture depth and bot access matter more than ever
  • How competitors can quietly gain traffic just by being included
